From the UPSL to the Bernabéu: Yan Diomande Scores His First Real Madrid Goal

Yan Diomande’s rise to the top of European football has taken another significant step. The Ivorian forward scored his first goal for Real Madrid on Saturday, October 10, securing a 1-0 victory over Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu. In the 62nd minute, Federico Valverde played a perfectly weighted through ball into Diomande’s path, allowing the forward to break through and finish across the goalkeeper. An initial offside flag was overturned following a VAR review, confirming the goal that ultimately decided the match.

What makes the moment particularly remarkable is how different Diomande’s footballing life looked just over two years ago. In August 2023, he was playing for AS Frenzi in the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL), a semi-professional competition in the United States. Diomande scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over Sporting Wichita in the national final, helping Frenzi secure the title and showcasing the individual qualities that would eventually take him to Europe’s biggest stages. At the time, he was a teenager developing his game in Florida rather than competing in a major European league.

Diomande had arrived in the United States from Ivory Coast as a 15-year-old to attend DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida. His experience combined education with football development, while playing for AS Frenzi gave him the opportunity to compete against older opponents in a more demanding environment. Although his route differed from the traditional European academy pathway, his performances attracted attention and helped keep his professional ambitions moving forward.

His breakthrough in Europe began with Leganés, where he signed in late 2024 before making his professional debut in Spanish football in 2025. He then moved to RB Leipzig, where his pace, dribbling and ability to create chances from wide positions helped him establish himself in the Bundesliga. His performances rapidly elevated his profile, and Real Madrid eventually secured his signature in the summer of 2026. In a relatively short period, Diomande had progressed from American semi-professional soccer to one of the world’s most prominent clubs.

The goal against Villarreal was more than an individual milestone. It was also a reward for a journey defined by different footballing environments, from youth development in Florida and the UPSL to the demands of professional competition in Spain and Germany. Scoring at the Bernabéu gives Diomande another important moment to build on as he adjusts to life at Real Madrid and continues competing for opportunities in a squad filled with elite attacking talent.

For the UPSL and AS Frenzi, his story is a reminder that the American soccer landscape can form part of a player’s journey toward the professional game, even when it is not the final destination. Diomande’s time in the competition was only one chapter in a much longer path, but it was a meaningful one: he was getting competitive minutes, scoring in a national final and continuing to develop before his European career took off.

Two years after lifting the UPSL title with AS Frenzi, Diomande is now celebrating his first goal in a Real Madrid shirt. The distance between those two moments captures the speed of his rise—and the unconventional route he took to reach the highest level of club football.
