The Vertex Cup continued to provide exactly what its London edition was designed to offer: competitive international matches between four nations preparing for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. The second matchday brought two very different victories, with Mexico cruising past China 3-0 before Argentina produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat Tanzania 3-2.
For Mexico, the result was an important response after opening the tournament with a penalty-shootout defeat against Argentina. El Tri had controlled stretches of that first game but ultimately had to settle for one point after the 2-2 draw, while Argentina collected two following its 4-3 shootout victory. This time, Mexico left no room for uncertainty, putting together a much more complete performance against China.
The difference was Edy Lugo. The Mexican forward scored twice, first opening the scoring in the 20th minute before returning from the penalty spot in the 55th to double the advantage. His first goal came after a cutback found him inside the area, where he finished with his left foot. His second was a composed penalty, giving him a brace and putting Mexico firmly in control.
Lugo’s performance also added another chapter to what has already been a productive period for the young attacker. Ahead of the Vertex Cup, he was part of a Mexico U-17 group featuring players from several important development environments, with the team entering the tournament after an impressive Concacaf qualifying campaign. Mexico won all four of its qualifying matches, scoring 20 goals and conceding only two, securing another appearance at the U-17 World Cup.
Alberto Cisneros then put the finishing touch on the victory in stoppage time. The Mexican midfielder carried the ball forward for roughly 30 meters before cutting in from the left and unleashing a powerful effort that found the net. It was the kind of individual action that transformed a comfortable victory into a convincing 3-0 statement.

If Mexico’s afternoon was about control, Argentina’s was about character.
The Albiceleste found itself two goals behind Tanzania and appeared destined to suffer its first regulation-time defeat of the tournament. Tanzania took the lead through Soann Adam from the penalty spot before Luqman Ally, who had already scored against China on Matchday 1, converted another penalty to make it 2-0.
Argentina’s response arrived through Mateo Sánchez. The Boca Juniors midfielder became the catalyst for one of the most dramatic comebacks of the tournament, scoring twice in the space of five minutes to bring Argentina level. His first came in the 75th minute, when he carried the ball forward before cutting inside and firing a powerful effort into the corner. His second followed soon after as he attacked the box from the second line and finished to make it 2-2.
The comeback was completed in the final action of the match. Tobías Goytía, a 17-year-old River Plate prospect, entered from the bench and became the decisive figure in stoppage time. After receiving an assist from Matheo Machuca, Goytía found himself in front of the Tanzanian goalkeeper and calmly finished with the inside of his right foot to make it 3-2 in the 95th minute.

With Argentina and Mexico both recording victories on Matchday 2, the final round will bring another opportunity for these young players to make their mark before the World Cup. And after another day full of twists, the Vertex Cup has once again shown that its biggest value may be found in the moments when young players are asked to respond under pressure.
