From Tampa to the Bundesliga: Santiago Castañeda Scores His First Top-Flight Goal

Santiago Castañeda scored his first Bundesliga goal on Sunday as Paderborn defeated Hoffenheim 3-1 for its first win of the season. The Tampa-born midfielder took an unconventional route to Germany, developing in Florida before leaving Tampa Bay United for high school soccer, getting discovered during a talent-identification trip to Denmark, and signing with MSV Duisburg in 2023. After moving to Paderborn in 2024, he helped the club earn promotion to the Bundesliga and has now established himself as a starter in Germany’s top flight.

Santiago Castañeda has taken a long and unconventional road to the Bundesliga. On Sunday, the Tampa, Florida-born midfielder reached another milestone in that journey, scoring his first Bundesliga goal as SC Paderborn defeated Hoffenheim 3-1 for their first victory of the season.

Starting in defensive midfield, Castañeda opened the scoring in the 29th minute after Hoffenheim failed to properly clear a corner. The ball fell to the 21-year-old, who found the net to give Paderborn the lead and, more importantly, score the club’s first Bundesliga goal of the 2026-27 campaign.

It was a fitting moment for a player whose path to Germany has been anything but conventional.

Castañeda was born on November 13, 2004, in Tampa, Florida, and grew up playing soccer in the Tampa area. His early development included Florida Premier FC, Tampa Bay United and the Tampa Bay Rowdies, before he made an unusual decision for a young American player hoping to pursue a professional career.

At 15, Castañeda left Tampa Bay United to attend Tampa Preparatory School, choosing high school soccer over the U.S. Soccer Development Academy at a time when the two pathways could not be combined.

The decision ultimately helped reconnect him with the enjoyment of the game.

That trip changed the direction of his career.

Rather than going through college and the traditional American development route, Castañeda decided to pursue professional soccer in Europe. He initially signed with MSV Duisburg in 2023, making the jump directly into Germany’s third tier.

He made 31 appearances during the 2024/2025 3.Liga season, scoring twice and adding two assists. One of those goals came in December 2023, when his first professional goal gave Duisburg a 1-0 victory over VfB Lübeck.

After just one season in Duisburg, Castañeda moved to SC Paderborn 07 in the summer of 2024.

The club quickly trusted him.

He became a regular starter during his first season, making 32 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga. The following year, he played another 31 league matches as Paderborn pushed toward promotion.

That opportunity finally arrived through the promotion playoff.

Paderborn defeated VfL Wolfsburg 2-1 on aggregate in May 2026, with Castañeda playing all 210 minutes of the two-legged series. The victory sent Paderborn into the Bundesliga for the first time since 2019-20.

For Castañeda, it meant that less than three years after leaving the United States for Germany, he had gone from playing in the 3. Liga to becoming a Bundesliga midfielder.

Castañeda’s story also has an international dimension.

He represents the United States internationally and received his first U.S. youth national-team call-up in November 2025, joining the inaugural U.S. U-21 squad. It was his first appearance at any level for the federation, having never previously been part of an American youth national-team camp.

His family background gives him another international connection. Both of his parents are from Colombia, with his father, Carlos Castañeda, having previously played professionally in the Colombian leagues. Santiago has therefore been eligible to represent Colombia as well, although his first international opportunity came with the United States.

Castañeda entered the 2026-27 campaign as one of the players responsible for helping Paderborn adapt to the Bundesliga.

His first Bundesliga goal capped a journey that began on the fields of Tampa, took him through high school soccer and the USL, and eventually brought him across the Atlantic without the benefit of the traditional academy-to-MLS pipeline.

Now, the 21-year-old is doing something even more difficult: establishing himself in one of the world’s top leagues.

And after helping Paderborn earn its first Bundesliga victory of the season, Castañeda has another milestone to add to a career that has already taken several unexpected turns.
