A Long Road Back: Roald Mitchell Heads to Denmark With Viborg FF

For Roald Mitchell, the road to European soccer has not been straightforward.

The 23-year-old forward has spent the past two years rebuilding his career after a serious knee injury interrupted what had been a promising start to his professional journey. Now, after fighting his way back, Mitchell is heading across the Atlantic.

Red Bull New York has loaned Mitchell to Viborg FF of the Danish Superliga through June 30, 2027, with the Danish club holding an option to make the move permanent. The transfer gives Mitchell his first opportunity to play professionally in Europe and represents the latest stage of a career that has already demanded plenty of patience and perseverance. 

Mitchell’s injury came just as he was beginning to make a serious impression.

After joining the Red Bulls as a Homegrown player following his college career at Wake Forest, the Montclair, New Jersey native quickly showed his scoring ability with New York Red Bulls II.

In the opening weeks of the 2024 season, Mitchell scored eight goals in his first five MLS NEXT Pro appearances, leading the league in scoring and earning Player of the Matchday honors.

On April 14, 2024, Mitchell suffered a left knee injury while playing for Red Bulls II against Chicago Fire FC II. The club announced that he would require surgery. At the time, Mitchell had already made two MLS appearances for the first team and was emerging as one of the organization’s most productive young forwards.

The injury ultimately became a season-ending one, forcing Mitchell into a lengthy rehabilitation process. He remained listed with a knee injury well into the 2024 season, with MLS injury reports repeatedly showing him unavailable.

For a young striker trying to establish himself at the professional level, it was a significant interruption.

But Mitchell’s response would become an important part of his story

When Mitchell finally returned, he had to rebuild his rhythm from the MLS NEXT Pro level.

He appeared in 11 regular-season matches in 2025, scoring four goals, before becoming one of the most important players in New York’s playoff run.

Mitchell scored five goals in four playoff matches, including a brace against Philadelphia Union II in the Eastern Conference Final. He scored in every playoff appearance and helped Red Bulls II win the club’s first MLS NEXT Pro Cup.

Those five postseason goals were the most ever scored by a player in a single MLS NEXT Pro playoff campaign at the time.

That run changed the trajectory of his career.

Instead of simply returning from injury, Mitchell had re-established himself as a legitimate professional goalscorer.

Mitchell continued his progress into 2026, recording four goals and an assist in seven MLS NEXT Pro appearances while making three MLS appearances for the Red Bulls.

Across his Red Bulls career, he has now made 39 appearances for Red Bull New York II, producing 23 goals and seven assists. His 23 goals rank third in the club’s history.

Those numbers help explain why Viborg became interested.

The Danish club describes Mitchell as a physically strong, athletic striker with pace, an ability to play with his back to goal and a proven eye for scoring. Sporting director Mads Agesen also highlighted the club’s belief that Mitchell fits the way Viborg wants to play.

Viborg has become Mitchell’s first European destination, giving him the chance to test himself in the Danish Superliga against established professional clubs.

The move also comes with a different international dimension. Although born and raised in the United States, Mitchell has Trinidad and Tobago roots and represents the Soca Warriors at senior level.

For a striker whose development was interrupted by surgery and a long rehabilitation, reaching the Danish Superliga is not simply a transfer. It is evidence of how far Mitchell has come since the injury threatened to derail his momentum.

And now, for the first time, he gets to find out what his game can look like on the other side of the Atlantic.
