New York City FC’s MLS NEXT Pro operation is about to take on a very different look.
Starting in July 2027, NYCFC II will relocate to Middlesex County, New Jersey, where it will become the foundation of a new locally branded MLS NEXT Pro club. Initially referred to as New Jersey MLS NEXT Pro, the team will eventually receive a new name, colors and crest designed around its new community.
The announcement was made Wednesday by Hometown Soccer Holdings, New York City FC, MLS NEXT Pro and Middlesex County officials, marking the first club relaunch under Hometown Soccer Holdings’ new commercial platform.
The club will play at the new NEXUS sports and entertainment district, giving professional soccer a permanent home in the heart of New Jersey.
And while the identity will change, one important piece will remain the same: NYCFC will continue to oversee all sporting operations and the club will remain New York City FC’s MLS NEXT Pro affiliate.
The move represents more than a relocation.
Hometown Soccer Holdings is set to build an entirely new local identity around the existing NYCFC II operation, with New Jersey supporters having a role in determining the club’s future name, colors and crest.
That distinction is important. The team will represent Middlesex County on matchdays, but its sporting connection to New York City FC will remain intact.
NYCFC will continue running the soccer side of the operation, including player development, while Hometown Soccer Holdings will serve as the commercial engine behind the new club.
That creates an unusual model within MLS NEXT Pro: a team with a distinct local identity and home market while maintaining a direct developmental relationship with an MLS first team.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber described New Jersey MLS NEXT Pro as the first club to relaunch under the league’s partnership with KKR and Hometown Soccer Holdings, calling it an important step in bringing professional soccer into more communities.
The team will play at NEXUS, a new $350 million sports and entertainment district in Middlesex County.
The development includes a new soccer stadium and NEXUS Fields at Thomas A. Edison Park, creating an environment where professional and youth soccer will operate in close proximity.
The stadium is expected to seat approximately 6,500 fans, giving the new club a venue specifically designed to establish a strong local matchday experience. The location is also intended to make the club accessible beyond Middlesex County. NEXUS sits near the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and Route 287, with relatively easy access from New York City and communities throughout the broader tri-state area. That geographic position could become one of the project’s biggest advantages as the club looks to build a fan base of its own.
The professional team is only one part of the project.
Middlesex County will become the second official New York City FC Youth Programs Regional Hub, joining LIU Post on Long Island.
Beginning in 2027, NYCFC Youth Programs plans to establish a new youth soccer club in Middlesex County, with teams and additional programming for players between 3 and 18 years old.
The programs will be based at NEXUS Fields, giving young players in the region access to NYCFC’s coaching methodology and player-development structure.
That could make the project particularly significant from a player-development perspective.
Rather than simply bringing an MLS NEXT Pro team to a new market, the partnership is designed to create a broader ecosystem: grassroots programming, youth development, professional soccer and a direct connection to an MLS organization.
It will be a New Jersey club, playing in a new stadium, carrying its own identity — while still developing players under the sporting direction of New York City FC.
For MLS NEXT Pro, it could be an early glimpse of what the league’s next generation of clubs will look like.
