The 2026-27 MLS NEXT campaign is set to begin on Saturday, September 5, with teams across the United States and Canada preparing for another year of competition, development and opportunities.
The new season will once again bring together MLS academies and independent programs in the country across multiple age groups.
For many players, it will mean a move into a new age category and another step in their development. For academies, it is the beginning of a long campaign that will eventually lead toward some of the most important events on the youth soccer calendar.

The Competition Format Returns
One of the key elements of the 2026-27 season will once again be the structure used when MLS academies face different types of opponents.
MLS academy teams will continue to compete against other MLS clubs with players from the same age group.
However, when playing against independent academies, MLS teams will compete against a group that is one year younger.
The format has become an important part of the MLS NEXT landscape and creates a unique competitive environment throughout the regular season.
It also means that results and performances must be evaluated within the context of the specific matchup, particularly when comparing teams and players across the different academy structures.
As in previous seasons, that distinction will remain relevant throughout the year as MLS clubs and independent academies compete across the country.

A Long Road Toward the Biggest Events
While the regular season begins on September 5, several of the most important dates of the 2026-27 MLS NEXT calendar have yet to be officially confirmed.
The schedule for major events such as MLS NEXT Fest, the Generation adidas Cup, MLS NEXT Flex and MLS NEXT Cup is still to be announced.
Those events will once again play a major role in shaping the season.
MLS NEXT Fest provides one of the first major opportunities for teams to test themselves in a high-level national environment, while the Generation adidas Cup remains one of the most important youth tournaments in the country.
MLS NEXT Flex will once again represent a crucial stage for teams looking to strengthen their position ahead of the final stretch of the season, with MLS NEXT Cup serving as the ultimate conclusion to the campaign.

A New Year of Opportunities
The beginning of a new season also brings a fresh opportunity for individual players.
For some, 2026-27 will be their first experience in MLS NEXT.
For others, it could be the season where they make the jump to an older age group, establish themselves as a key player or begin attracting attention from professional clubs and national team scouts.
MLS NEXT has continued to serve as an important platform for players looking to take the next step, whether that leads toward an MLS first team, MLS NEXT Pro, college soccer or opportunities outside the United States. Every season also brings new storylines.
The 2026-27 MLS NEXT season officially begins, opening another year of competition for the next generation of talent across North American soccer.
A new season. A new group of players. And another opportunity to make a name in MLS NEXT.
