The stage is set for another international youth soccer showcase in South Florida. The groups for the 2026 Messi Cup have been confirmed, bringing together some of the most recognizable names in global football and creating several compelling matchups before a ball has even been kicked. With defending champions River Plate returning and the field expanding to 16 teams, the second edition promises a more demanding test for the academies involved.
The tournament will take place from October 25 through November 1 in the Miami area, with teams competing at Inter Miami CF Stadium and the club’s Florida Blue Training Center. After debuting with eight teams in December 2025, the competition has doubled its field for 2026, bringing together U-16 academies from nine countries across three continents.

Group A immediately stands out as one of the tournament’s most intriguing sections. River Plate will begin their title defense against Chelsea, Inter Milan and Ajax, three clubs with established youth development systems and a long history of producing players for the professional game. For River, the challenge will be to build on last year’s championship while navigating a group in which every opponent brings a different footballing identity.
Group B offers another heavyweight lineup, pairing Palmeiras and Newell’s Old Boys with Arsenal and Barcelona. The group brings together Brazilian and Argentine youth development with two of Europe’s best-known academies, setting up a fascinating test of contrasting styles. Barcelona’s technical tradition, Arsenal’s development pathway and the South American clubs’ competitive intensity should make this one of the groups to watch.
The hosts will have a difficult task of their own. Inter Miami have been drawn in Group C alongside Atlético de Madrid, Benfica and Independiente del Valle. The Spanish and Portuguese clubs bring considerable experience in developing young talent, while Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle has established itself as an important source of emerging players in South America. Playing on home soil will give Inter Miami a familiar setting, but progression will require strong performances against three international opponents.
Group D features another collection of compelling matchups, with Flamengo and Boca Juniors facing Manchester City and UE Cornellà. Manchester City’s academy will meet two of South America’s most prominent clubs, while Cornellà adds a distinctive connection to the tournament’s founder: the Catalan club was acquired by Lionel Messi. The group rounds out a field designed to expose young players to different football cultures and competitive environments.

Beyond the chance to compete for a trophy, the Messi Cup gives players an opportunity to test their development against peers from outside their domestic leagues, while offering scouts and fans a closer look at prospects from some of the world’s leading academies.
River Plate enter the competition as the team to beat after winning the inaugural Messi Cup in 2025, when they defeated Atlético de Madrid in the final. Their title defense now begins against a considerably expanded field, with several major academies hoping to take the trophy away from Argentina.
With the groups confirmed, attention will turn to the match schedule and the opening fixtures. The 2026 Messi Cup begins on October 25, bringing a week of international youth competition to South Florida and another opportunity to see which emerging talents can make their mark on a global stage.
