Joshua & Mitchell Lee Baker: One Surname, Two National Teams

Joshua and Mitchell Lee Baker are brothers, but they are now building their international careers with different national teams.

The two Australian roots players shared part of their football development at a young age, including time in the Melbourne City system, before eventually taking different routes across the world.

Today, Mitchell is representing Indonesia, while Joshua has been included in Hong Kong’s provisional senior squad.

Both brothers have also developed their careers in the United States, making their story even more unique. Mitchell has become one of the most productive young forwards in American college soccer, while Joshua, born in 2009, is beginning to make his own name at the international level.

Their football stories started together.

Now, they are being written separately.

Joshua Baker has been included in Hong Kong’s provisional senior squad, giving the 2009-born midfielder an opportunity to experience the senior national-team environment at just 16 years old.

His development has taken place largely in the United States, where he previously played for Shattuck-St. Mary’s before continuing with Black Rock FC.

But his international connection has always been important.

Born in Hong Kong, Joshua has already been involved in the country’s youth setup and has continued progressing through its national-team pathway.

Most recently, Joshua was part of Hong Kong’s U20 squad during the AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifying campaign, gaining valuable international experience against older players before earning his opportunity around the senior national team.

His inclusion in the provisional senior squad represents the latest step in that progression and gives Hong Kong the opportunity to evaluate one of its younger prospects alongside senior internationals.

It is also an important moment for Joshua personally.

At an age when many players are still establishing themselves at the youth level, he is already entering the conversation around a senior national team.

Mitchell’s route has been considerably different.

The older Baker brother has built his football career in the United States, eventually becoming one of the most productive young forwards in American college soccer with Georgetown.

His breakthrough came during the 2025 season, when he started all 21 matches and recorded 14 goals and three assists.

Those numbers helped him earn First Team All-BIG EAST and First Team All-East Region honors, while also establishing him as one of the most dangerous attacking players in college soccer.

His performances eventually led to the Colorado Rapids selecting him No. 10 overall in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft.

But while Mitchell has built his career in the American soccer system, his international future was always open to different possibilities.

Born in Australia and with Indonesian heritage through his mother, Mitchell had the option to represent Indonesia.

Mitchell was called into Indonesia’s senior squad for the 2026 ASEAN Championship, and the Georgetown forward immediately showed why the Indonesian federation had been interested in bringing him into the setup.

On his senior international debut against Cambodia, the 19-year-old scored a hat-trick, helping Indonesia make a strong start to the tournament. 

His impact continued throughout the tournament. After his opening hat-trick, Baker quickly became one of the standout attacking players in the competition and was among the tournament’s leading scorers. 

Joshua and Mitchell share the same family background and both have Australian and Indonesian eligibility, while Joshua also has a direct connection to Hong Kong.

But when the opportunity to choose an international pathway arrived, the brothers went in different directions.

Mitchell chose Indonesia.

Joshua is pursuing Hong Kong.

One surname.

Two national teams.

And two brothers beginning to write very different chapters of the same football story.
