Jack McGlynn Heads to England as Stoke City Complete Move for U.S. Midfielder

Stoke City have agreed to a deal to sign the American midfielder from Houston Dynamo in a move that will take the 2003-born player to the English Championship.

Houston is set to receive a fee of up to $5.5 million (£4 million), including add-ons, while also retaining a significant sell-on clause, according to Bogert’s reporting.

The transfer represents a significant return on Houston’s investment in McGlynn and completes a plan that was already in place when the club acquired him ahead of the 2025 season: continue developing the midfielder in MLS before eventually helping him make the move to Europe.

McGlynn joined Houston Dynamo ahead of the 2025 season after beginning his MLS career with Philadelphia Union.

The move to Houston was designed to give the midfielder an environment where he could continue developing and take on a larger role before eventually making the jump to European football.

That progression happened quickly.

McGlynn made 51 appearances for Houston, establishing himself as one of the team’s most technically gifted midfielders.

His first full season with the Dynamo was also his most productive at the professional level. During the 2025 campaign, he recorded six goals and seven assists, setting career highs in both categories.

He has continued to contribute during the current season, registering two goals and five assists before making the move to Stoke.

The numbers tell part of the story, but McGlynn’s value has always extended beyond his production.

McGlynn is a technically gifted midfielder capable of operating in different areas of the pitch.

He can play as a deep-lying playmaker, where his passing range allows him to dictate the tempo from deeper positions, or operate further forward when his team needs him to influence the attacking phase.

His left foot is one of his biggest weapons.

McGlynn has the ability to break lines with his passing, switch play over long distances and create chances from deeper areas. He is also a dangerous threat from outside the box and has developed into a valuable set-piece taker.

Those qualities should give Stoke another technically capable option as McGlynn begins adapting to the demands of English football.

The move to Stoke comes at an important point in McGlynn’s career.

The midfielder has already established himself as a regular MLS player, accumulated more than 50 appearances with Houston and earned opportunities with the U.S. national team.

He currently has 13 senior caps for the United States.

McGlynn was also part of the conversation surrounding the U.S. squad for the 2026 World Cup but ultimately missed out on the final roster. Despite that disappointment, he remains within the player pool under head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Moving to England now gives him another opportunity to continue making his case.

The Championship offers a highly competitive environment, and success at Stoke could put McGlynn in an even stronger position as he looks to return to the national team picture.
