Gilberto Mora Makes History With Mexico

Gilberto Mora added another historic milestone to his rapidly growing résumé, scoring his first senior goal for Mexico in a 1-1 draw against Colombia while becoming the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Mexican national team. The 17-year-old also wore Mexico’s No. 10 shirt for the first time, continuing a record-breaking rise that has already seen him become the youngest Liga MX starter and goalscorer, Mexico’s youngest senior international, the youngest winner of a FIFA men’s senior international tournament and Mexico’s youngest-ever World Cup player.

Gilberto Mora has spent the last two years turning age milestones into a habit. On Saturday night, the 17-year-old added another historic achievement to the list, scoring his first senior goal for Mexico and becoming the youngest player ever to score for El Tri.

Wearing Mexico’s No. 10 for the first time, Mora produced the moment himself. In the 61st minute against Colombia, the Club Tijuana midfielder received the ball inside the box, cut past Jhon Lucumí and fired a low right-footed shot past goalkeeper Álvaro Montero to make it 1-1. It was his first goal in his 13th appearance for the senior national team — and another record for a player who has been rewriting Mexico’s age marks since he was 15.

At 17 years, 11 months and 12 days, Mora surpassed the previous record for Mexico’s youngest senior goalscorer. That mark had been associated with Manuel “Chaquetas” Rosas, who scored for Mexico at 18 years and three months in the 1930 World Cup. Other reports have compared Mora’s age with Carlos Vela’s modern-era record, but the historical benchmark cited by Mexican football records is Rosas’ mark from 1930.

Mora first attracted national attention in August 2024, when he made his Liga MX debut for Tijuana at just 15 years, 10 months and four days. He immediately provided an assist against Santos Laguna, announcing himself as one of the youngest players ever to appear in Mexico’s top division.

Just 12 days later, he started against León and scored his first professional goal. At 15 years and 320 days, Mora became the youngest goalscorer in Liga MX history, while also becoming the youngest player ever to start a match in the competition.

His development accelerated from there. He moved through Mexico’s youth national-team levels at extraordinary speed, representing the U-15s at 13, the U-16, U-17 and U-18 teams at 15, and eventually reaching the U-20 and senior teams at 16.

Mora’s senior breakthrough came at the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup.

He made his Mexico debut against Saudi Arabia in the quarterfinals at 16, immediately becoming the youngest player ever to appear for the senior national team. He then started the semifinal against Honduras and assisted Raúl Jiménez for the winning goal before starting the final against the United States.

Mexico won the tournament, and Mora made even more history.

At 16 years and 265 days, he became the youngest player ever to win a FIFA men’s senior international tournament, surpassing the previous record held by Lamine Yamal, who had won Euro 2024 at 17 years and one day.

Mora entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Mexico’s youngest player in the squad. When he came off the bench against South Africa in the opening match, he broke another record that had survived for nearly a century.

At 17 years and 240 days, Mora became the youngest Mexican player ever to appear at a World Cup, surpassing Manuel Rosas’ mark from the 1930 tournament.

It was also an achievement on the global stage. Mora became the sixth-youngest player ever to appear in a FIFA World Cup, behind only Norman Whiteside, Samuel Eto’o, Femi Opabunmi, Salomon Olembe and Pelé.

The Colombia match added another chapter.

Mora not only became Mexico’s youngest goalscorer; he did it while taking on one of the most recognizable shirts in Mexican football. His first appearance as the No. 10 ended with his first senior goal, giving the new Márquez era one of its clearest early moments.

For Mora, though, the remarkable part is how quickly these milestones have accumulated.

He has been the youngest Tijuana player to debut in Liga MX, the youngest Liga MX starter, the youngest goalscorer in league history, the youngest player to debut for Mexico, the youngest player to win a FIFA men’s senior international tournament and the youngest Mexican to appear at a World Cup.

Now he is also the youngest player to score for Mexico.

And he is still 17.

For a player who has spent the past two years breaking records almost as quickly as they can be listed, Gilberto Mora’s story is becoming less about the next record and more about how many of them he can leave behind before his teenage years are even over.
