Gilberto Mora’s long-awaited move to European football appears to be getting closer, and if the latest reports prove accurate, the Mexican teenager could make history in the process. The 17-year-old Club Tijuana midfielder is reportedly the subject of an offer worth more than $50 million from a European club, with Liverpool emerging as the strongest candidate to secure his signature.

The reported proposal was confirmed by Mexican journalist David Faitelson, who stated that Mora’s representative, Rafaela Pimenta, informed Tijuana of an offer from an English club believed to be Liverpool. The figure would reportedly exceed $50 million, potentially making Mora the most expensive Mexican player ever transferred from Liga MX to Europe. Other reports have placed Liverpool’s potential proposal at around £40 million, which would be equivalent to roughly $53 million. However, no official transfer fee has been announced by either club.

Liverpool’s interest in Mora is not new. The Premier League club publicly acknowledged reports of its “serious interest” in the teenager earlier this year, while sources have indicated that the Reds have been in direct contact with his representatives. Borussia Dortmund and Benfica have also been linked with the midfielder, while Real Madrid and Barcelona continue to monitor his development.

What makes the potential transfer particularly significant is how quickly Mora has reached this point. Born on October 14, 2008, the Tuxtla Gutiérrez native made his Liga MX debut for Tijuana at just 15 and has since become a senior Mexico international. His rise accelerated dramatically during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he became the youngest player to represent Mexico at the tournament and started in the knockout stage against Ecuador and England.

His development also prompted Tijuana to secure his future earlier this year. In June, the club announced a historic three-year contract extension with Mora, describing it as the most important agreement for a player in the club’s history. The deal also saw him inherit the No. 10 shirt and included a specifically structured mechanism designed around a potential future transfer.

Mora has continued to build his case since the World Cup. In September, he scored his first senior international goal for Mexico against Colombia, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the history of the national team. He also recently became the youngest player to wear Mexico’s No. 10 shirt, adding another milestone to a career that has been defined by breaking age-related records.

The timing of a potential move is also significant. Mora turns 18 on October 14, meaning he will reach the minimum age required for an international transfer under FIFA regulations. Recent reports suggest that an announcement could come around his birthday, with the actual move potentially taking place in January.

For now, the identity of Mora’s next club remains officially unresolved, and the reported $50 million figure has not been confirmed by the clubs involved. But the direction of the story is becoming increasingly clear: after rising from Tijuana’s academy to the World Cup stage before his 18th birthday, Gilberto Mora could soon be preparing for the next chapter of his development in Europe — potentially as the most expensive Mexican player ever to make the journey.
