From Met Oval to MLS: Dennis Nelich Earns His Red Bulls Breakthrough

Dennis Nelich has completed a remarkably quick rise through the Red Bull New York pathway.

The 18-year-old winger has signed a one-and-a-half-year MLS contract with Red Bull New York as a Homegrown Player, keeping him with the club through the 2027-28 season with options that could extend the agreement through 2030-31. The move comes after Nelich emerged as one of Red Bull New York II’s most productive attacking players in MLS NEXT Pro during 2026. 

What makes his progression particularly interesting is how quickly it has happened. Nelich joined the Red Bulls Academy in 2024 after previously developing with Met Oval Academy. Less than two years later, he has gone from the youth system to MLS NEXT Pro, earned first-team opportunities and now secured a long-term pathway into Major League Soccer. 

Born on March 3, 2008, and raised in Brighton Beach, New York, Nelich has developed as a winger capable of playing in advanced attacking positions. His profile has become increasingly prominent within the Red Bulls system since making the move into the academy.

His professional journey began with Red Bull New York II in March 2025, when he made his MLS NEXT Pro debut against Philadelphia Union II. He finished that season with two goals in eight league appearances and also contributed during the club’s run to the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro Cup title, entering the final against Colorado Rapids 2 in the 113th minute before Red Bulls II eventually prevailed in a penalty shootout. 

Nelich took his game to another level in 2026.

Through 23 MLS NEXT Pro matches, the winger produced seven goals and six assists, giving him a team-leading 13 goal contributions for Red Bulls II. His performances earned him the MLS NEXT Pro Rising Star award in Matchweek 9 after he scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Philadelphia Union II.

Then came the performance that really announced his arrival.

On June 28, Nelich scored a hat-trick in Red Bulls II’s 5-0 win over Philadelphia Union II. At 18 years and 117 days old, he became the second-youngest player in club history to score three goals in an MLS NEXT Pro match. The performance earned him Player of Matchweek 17 honors and further accelerated his path toward the first team. 

His production was not limited to scoring, either. Six assists alongside seven goals demonstrated his ability to contribute as a creator as well as a finisher, giving Red Bulls II a dangerous attacking option from the wing.

The transition to the senior environment began arriving quickly.

In August, Red Bull New York started bringing Nelich into the MLS squad through short-term agreements, giving him opportunities to train and compete alongside established MLS players. On September 9, he made his MLS debut against Los Angeles FC and also earned his first start. 

His first start also provided an intriguing glimpse of the intensity he could bring to the senior level. Nelich covered 12.25 kilometers against LAFC, ranking 10th among all players in MLS on that Matchday. 

Nelich’s signing also represents exactly the type of progression the Red Bulls’ development structure is designed to create.

He joined the academy in 2024, moved into MLS NEXT Pro, helped Red Bulls II win a championship, became one of the team’s most productive attackers and then earned his MLS debut before his 19th birthday.

Across his two seasons with Red Bulls II, Nelich has now recorded nine goals and four assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. His 2026 campaign, however, is what truly changed the trajectory of his career. 

For a player who entered the Red Bulls Academy only two years ago, the speed of that progression is notable.

Now, instead of waiting for a future opportunity, Nelich has officially been given his place in the first-team pathway.

At 18, the next chapter begins in MLS.
