Cavan Sullivan Earns First USMNT Call-Up at 16 After Explosive Breakthrough Season

Cavan Sullivan’s rise has reached another extraordinary milestone.

The 16-year-old Philadelphia Union midfielder has received his first call-up to the United States Men’s National Team, becoming one of the youngest players ever to be invited into the senior setup. Sources confirmed the news to ESPN on Wednesday, with Sullivan set to join Mauricio Pochettino’s squad for the upcoming international window. 

The timing could hardly be more significant.

Sullivan enters the national-team picture after producing one of the most remarkable stretches of form by a teenager in MLS this season. In Philadelphia’s 5-0 win over San Diego FC on Sunday, he scored twice and added an assist, including an audacious backheel finish, to earn his first MLS Player of the Matchday award. It was his seventh consecutive MLS match with a goal contribution, the longest such streak by a teenager in league history. 

He now has six goals and 11 assists in MLS this season, giving him 17 goal contributions. Only three teenagers in league history have produced more in a single season, according to MLS, putting Sullivan within touching distance of Diego Fagúndez’s teenage record of 20.

But the numbers only tell part of the story.

Sullivan has gone from being one of the most closely watched academy players in American soccer to becoming a genuine difference-maker against senior professionals. His breakthrough has accelerated dramatically since the World Cup break, with Philadelphia going unbeaten across 10 matches and Sullivan emerging as one of the central figures in that run. 

The midfielder has been on the radar of U.S. Soccer for years. Born in Philadelphia in September 2009, Sullivan joined the Union Academy in 2020 and progressed through the club’s Pro Player Pathway, featuring for the U15 and U17 sides before making the jump into professional soccer.

His youth international résumé was already remarkable before this latest breakthrough. In 2023, Sullivan helped the United States win its first-ever Concacaf U-15 Championship, scoring four goals and winning the tournament’s Golden Ball as its best player. He was the youngest member of that championship-winning team. 

The following year, he helped the Union U17s win another Generation adidas Cup title while also continuing to gain experience with Philadelphia Union II. His development eventually led to his MLS debut at just 14 years and 293 days, when he became the youngest player ever to appear in an MLS match, breaking Freddy Adu’s longstanding record. 

Now, less than two years after that historic debut, Sullivan is moving into the senior international picture.

The call-up comes as Pochettino begins building his next USMNT cycle following the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The United States are scheduled to face Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada during the upcoming September-October window, giving Sullivan the opportunity to train alongside established senior internationals and potentially make his first appearance for the national team.

If he takes the field, Sullivan would become the second-youngest player ever to earn a USMNT cap, behind only Adu. That would add another chapter to a career that has repeatedly rewritten the age records around him.

There is also a larger significance to the moment for Philadelphia. Sullivan is the latest product of an academy that has increasingly become one of the most important development pipelines in American soccer, and his rise alongside other young Union players has helped make Philadelphia one of the focal points of the USMNT’s next generation.

For Sullivan himself, however, this is not simply another record.

The teenager who first attracted international attention as a 13-year-old is now being brought into the senior national team environment on the strength of what he is doing right now, against MLS opponents and on a team fighting its way back into the playoff picture.

His first USMNT call-up is no longer about what Cavan Sullivan might become.

It is recognition of what he has already started to become.
