Cavan Sullivan Surpasses Freddy Adu’s Record as His Remarkable MLS Rise Continues

Cavan Sullivan is rewriting the history of Major League Soccer one week at a time.

The Philadelphia Union teenager scored again on Saturday night, finding the net in a 2-0 victory over CF Montréal and reaching a remarkable 11 goal contributions in MLS this season.

In doing so, Sullivan surpassed a record that had belonged to Freddy Adu for more than two decades.

At just 16 years and 342 days old, Sullivan is now the youngest player in MLS history to reach 11 goal contributions in a single season. Adu previously held the mark after recording 10 goal contributions during his age-16 season with D.C. United in 2005.

For Sullivan, the achievement is another piece of history in what has quickly become one of the most remarkable teenage seasons in MLS.

The timing makes the accomplishment even more significant.

Just one week earlier, Sullivan scored a spectacular long-range goal in Philadelphia’s 3-1 victory over Red Bull New York, bringing his season total to 10 goal contributions and tying Adu’s record.

Rather than waiting long to break it, Sullivan did it in his very next appearance.

Against Montréal, he found the breakthrough in the 75th minute, finishing with his left foot to give Philadelphia a two-goal cushion and ultimately secure another three points.

It was his third consecutive MLS match with a goal, and his fifth straight game contributing either a goal or an assist.

That five-game streak is itself historic: Sullivan is now the youngest player in MLS history — and the first teenager — to record a goal contribution in five consecutive matches. 

There is something fitting about Adu’s name continuing to appear alongside Sullivan’s.

Adu was the American soccer prodigy of his generation, becoming the youngest player in MLS history when he debuted for D.C. United at 14 years and 306 days old in 2004.

Twenty years later, Sullivan broke that record when he made his Philadelphia Union debut at 14 years and 293 days, becoming the youngest player ever to appear in an MLS match.

Now, Sullivan has passed another mark established by Adu.

The two players followed very different career paths, but their names remain connected in the MLS record book — with Sullivan continuing to add records to his résumé while still only 16.

Sullivan’s rise has naturally attracted enormous attention beyond MLS.

The midfielder already has an agreement that will see him join Manchester City once he turns 18, meaning Philadelphia remains the place where he will continue his development before making the move to England.

That future has made every step of Sullivan’s MLS development particularly important.

Rather than rushing his transition to Europe, he is now getting meaningful first-team minutes against professional opposition and building a statistical résumé that places him alongside some of the most notable young players in league history.

His current run also comes at a time when his name is increasingly being discussed in connection with the U.S. men’s national team. At just 16, Sullivan still has considerable time to develop before becoming a senior international regular, but his performances are making the conversation increasingly difficult to ignore.

He already became the youngest player in MLS history. He has already scored his first league goal. Now he has surpassed one of Adu’s long-standing statistical marks and become the youngest player ever to produce 11 goal contributions in a single MLS season.

And with Philadelphia’s 2026 campaign still ongoing, Sullivan has time to push that number even higher.

At this pace, the record book may have to keep making room for him.
