Armando Gonzalez Leads Olympiacos to Victory With Two Goals and an Assist

Armando González is quickly making himself impossible to ignore at Olympiacos.

The Mexican striker delivered his biggest performance yet since moving to Greece, scoring twice and adding an assist as Olympiacos defeated Volos 3-2 in the Greek Cup on Tuesday. It was a statement performance from a forward who has wasted little time showing why the Greek giants invested heavily in him this summer.

González opened the scoring in the 42nd minute before striking again in the 50th, putting Olympiacos in control.

He wasn’t finished there.

In the 68th minute, González turned creator, setting up Gustavo Puerta for Olympiacos’ third goal. He directly contributed to all three of his team’s goals before being substituted, capping an outstanding individual performance.

The performance continues what has been an extremely encouraging beginning to González’s European adventure.

The 23-year-old arrived at Olympiacos from Chivas in August after establishing himself as one of the most productive young forwards in Liga MX. He scored 24 goals across the Apertura 2025 and Clausura 2026, numbers that helped convince Olympiacos to make a significant investment in bringing him to Greece.

The club signed González through June 2031, giving the forward a long-term opportunity to establish himself in European football.

His first weeks in Greece have already offered glimpses of what Olympiacos saw in him.

On September 2, González scored his first European goal and provided an assist in a 4-0 Greek Cup victory over Larissa. Just six days later, he followed that performance with two goals and another assist against Volos.

That gives him three goals and two assists in his first two Greek Cup appearances.

González’s move to Olympiacos came after several years of development within the Chivas system.

Known as “La Hormiga,” he progressed through Guadalajara’s academy before making his senior debut in January 2024. He eventually became one of Chivas’ primary attacking weapons, finishing his final season in Mexico with 24 goals across the Apertura and Clausura tournaments.

That production earned him a move to one of Greece’s biggest clubs and a contract that runs through 2031.

The transfer also represents the next step in a rapid rise with the Mexican national team.

González had already broken into the senior setup before moving to Europe, earning eight caps and scoring once. He was also included in Mexico’s 2026 World Cup squad and appeared in the tournament’s opening match against South Africa.

Now, his club career is entering an entirely different stage.

González has produced four goal contributions in his last two appearances for Olympiacos, giving the club an early glimpse of the attacking impact it hoped to get when it brought him to Greece.

His European chapter is still in its opening stages, but “La Hormiga” is already making plenty of noise.
