Ada Karatepe’s journey from the American youth soccer system to one of Turkey’s biggest clubs took another step forward on Friday. The 19-year-old midfielder made his first-team debut for Galatasaray, coming off the bench in the second half of a 3-3 friendly draw against Pendikspor.

For Karatepe, the appearance represents another milestone in a journey that began in the United States before taking him across the Atlantic. Born in Washington, D.C., on January 27, 2007, and holding U.S. nationality, the attacking midfielder developed with D.C. United’s academy before moving to Achilles FC in 2022. He remained with the Virginia-based club through 2025, building his reputation before making the move to Turkey.

The next stage of his development came at Achilles FC, where Karatepe continued playing in the American youth system before attracting interest from abroad. Galatasaray eventually brought him to Istanbul in December 2025, signing him from Achilles FC on a free transfer and initially placing him with the club’s U-19 side. Turkish reports described the move as an investment in a young American player capable of playing as a No. 10 or on the wing.

Rather than immediately jumping into senior football, Karatepe spent the following months adapting to a completely different football environment. His performances with Galatasaray U-19 have given him a platform to continue that transition, with his attacking qualities making him an important part of the youth setup.

He has already shown an ability to influence games from midfield. In August, Karatepe scored a hat-trick for Galatasaray U-19 in a 9-1 victory over Arca Çorum FK, scoring three times in the final 12 minutes of the match.

The progression eventually led to an opportunity with the senior side. On Friday, Galatasaray faced Pendikspor in a friendly during the international break, with the Turkish giants trailing 3-0 at halftime. Karatepe was one of the players introduced after the break as Galatasaray fought back to level the match through goals from Arda Ünyay, Arda Tagay and Kaan Ayhan.

Although it was a friendly rather than a competitive senior debut, stepping onto the field for Galatasaray’s first team represents an important marker in Karatepe’s development. The club has already registered him with its senior side, while his youth-team performances have continued to give the coaching staff reasons to monitor his progression.

His story is also an example of the increasingly international pathways available to young American players. Karatepe developed in the U.S., earned exposure within the national-team identification system, moved through the academy structure at Achilles FC and eventually earned an opportunity at a historic European club.

Now, the next challenge is turning a first-team appearance into something more permanent. For a player who only moved to Turkey less than a year ago, Karatepe’s progression from Galatasaray U-19 to the senior squad is another significant step in a career that is beginning to take him well beyond the American youth soccer landscape.
