The 2025 USL Academy Finals have taken over IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, bringing together 16 elite youth clubs in a knockout format that runs from Dec. 4–7. This year’s edition has felt bigger and bolder, not only because of the national talent on display, but also because of the level of competition in the tournament. The Finals are once again spotlighting which academies are truly building pipelines — not moments.
Indy Eleven Still Setting The Standard
Indy Eleven entered this year’s Finals with a resume few can match. They booked their ticket by capturing their fourth straight USL Pathway Spring Classic U-20 Elite championship — a tournament they won by conceding only one goal over four matches.

Their squad is loaded with returning standouts, including forward Victor Aguilar, defender Jake Alb, attacking threat Edin Cvorovic, and goalkeeper Ryan Hunsucker. That continuity and star power translated immediately into tournament success, as Indy cruised through the Round of 16 and quarterfinals with 3–0 wins over Western Mass Pioneers and Richmond Kickers, respectively.
However, the team's grit and composure were put on full display in its semifinal clash against Utah Red Wolves SC. Both sides battled it out in a defensive chess match and chose very carefully when to attack. Neither side was able to get on the score sheet at the end of regulation and extra time. In a penalty shootout, Indy Eleven squeezed out an intense win after scoring all four of their penalty attempts to seal their spot once again in the championship match.

With national titles already in their pocket from 2021 and 2024, Indy’s academy continues to set the bar for consistency, identity and homegrown player development.
AC Connecticut: The Underdogs Who Refuse to Go Away
If Indy Eleven represents domination, AC Connecticut represents defiance. After finishing as runner-ups to Indy in last year’s final, the Connecticut side returned this year with a point to prove. Their academy has quietly become one of the most productive in the USL youth landscape, with multiple teams qualifying for national events across 2024 and 2025. Their 2025 quarterfinal win — a gritty, high-pressure 3–2 battle against Sporting JAX — showed exactly why this team can hang with anyone. They refuse to crack, they rally when they’re down, and they play with the kind of edge you expect from a team tired of being labeled “the dark horse.”

AC Connecticut used that same mentality to take down a Lexington SC team that was firing on all cylinders in the attack in its previous knockout matches. If there's anything AC Connecticut has shown us this time around, it's that they are proving they are no longer surprising anyone. Instead, they are contenders on merit.
Who’s Shining: The Top Performers of the Tournament
Several players have emerged as defining figures of the 2025 Finals. Indy’s returning core — Aguilar, Alb, Cvorovic, and Hunsucker — have reinforced their reputations as some of the most polished talents in the event. Aguilar continues to be a constant goal threat, Alb anchors a defensive unit that rarely panics, Cvorovic adds creativity and tempo, and Hunsucker remains one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the tournament. Lexington SC's Felipe Valencia registered three goals in two games to prove he's a constant threat on the ball.

In defense, Utah Red Wolves SC's goalkeeper Kai Spencer has made a number of impressive saves to give his team a chance at a third-place finish. His marquee match in the tournament came when he blocked two penalties in a shootout against Orange County SC in the quarterfinals. It proved to be enough to earn his team a win and advance to the semifinal.
Surprise Teams Making Noise
While Indy and AC Connecticut have once again proven they belong in the final, the tournament has also featured several teams that exceeded expectations, including Utah Red Wolves SC and Lexington SC. They both showed their fearless attitude when going toe-to-toe with top seeds, and a few pushed heavyweights deeper into matches than anyone predicted. The single-elimination format rewards mentality as much as talent, and both Utah and Lexington made statements that will reshape how they’re viewed entering next season.

Preview: Third-Place Match
The third-place match on Sunday, Dec. 7, will be between Utah Red Wolves SC and Lexington SC. It's a chance for both sides to showcase their talent and end the tournament with meaningful hardware. Even though it’s not the final, the game often becomes a proving ground for players seeking to boost their profiles before the next academy cycle or before making jumps into U-20 or senior environments. It’s a match that tends to deliver goals, emotion, and breakout moments, making it much more than a consolation game.

Championship Preview
And then comes the showdown everyone surely expected. Indy Eleven will face AC Connecticut in what will be a rematch of the 2024 title game. One of the USL Academy’s emerging rivalries. Indy arrives as the favorites, backed by history, structure, and a roster stacked with returning Best XI-level talent. They’ve built a culture of winning that shows up in long tournaments like this.
But AC Connecticut enters with a hunger that no stat sheet can measure. Their 2025 run has been fueled by toughness, fearlessness, and a refusal to let last year define them. The matchup feels like the perfect collision: the reigning power versus the team that refuses to be anyone’s stepping stone. If last year’s final is any indication, this one will be physical, fast, and emotionally charged.

The Bigger Picture
The 2025 USL Academy Finals are once again reinforcing the importance of youth development in American soccer — and showing why Indy Eleven and AC Connecticut are becoming brands of their own. Indy’s pipeline continues to produce players who move into pro environments. AC Connecticut’s rise shows what happens when a club invests in culture, not hype. These Finals aren’t just another tournament — they’re a look at the future of the American game.
