As the club season winds down and college coaches start circling, the 2025 USL Academy Finals are shaping up to be the talent showcase of the winter for U.S. youth soccer. From format to teams and players to watch, here’s everything you need to know for the tournament.
Tournament Format & Location
The Finals return once again to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, running from Thursday, Dec. 4, through Sunday, Dec. 7, 2025. Sixteen teams make the field: the 12 division winners across the USL Academy League, three wild-card second-place teams, and one additional berth awarded through the new USL Pathway Spring Classic — this year claimed by Indy Eleven’s U-20 squad. Seeding isn’t random; it’s based on roster composition, league results and strength of schedule to ensure a balanced and competitive bracket.

The Finals use a single-elimination knockout format, meaning every game carries real pressure — one mistake and an entire season ends. Running alongside the main bracket is the Invitational Division, which even includes a group of European academy standouts, such as the LFE All-Stars. This unique setup gives American prospects a chance to compete in a high-visibility, international-style environment. Ultimately, this event isn’t just about winning a trophy, but also a launchpad for teenagers chasing college pathways or professional contracts.
Round of 16 Matchups
The opening day slate features a mix of powerhouse academies and emerging dark horses. Lexington SC opens against the Westchester Flames, while Sporting JAX faces the Staten Island Monarchs in a morning matchup. Indy Eleven, entering as defending champions, take on the Western Mass Pioneers, and Richmond Kickers meet San Antonio FC in a midday clash. Miami FC squares off with AC Connecticut, Orange County SC faces Lancaster FC, and SSA Swarm will battle the Utah Red Wolves SC. Rounding out the first day, El Paso Locomotive FC takes on City SC in a high-energy afternoon match.

The winners move on to the quarterfinals and semifinals across the following two days, with the championship set for Sunday, December 7, closing out one of the biggest youth soccer weekends in the country.
Previous Winner & What It Means For 2025
Indy Eleven enters this year’s tournament with a massive chip on its shoulder as the defending champions. Their 2024 squad dominated the Finals, defeating AC Connecticut 2–0 in last year’s title match at IMG Academy. That championship win capped off an unreal season in which Indy finished with a 15-0-3 record, scoring 45 goals while conceding just 10, and recording seven clean sheets. Several players from that group have since moved on to higher levels, proving that strong performances at the Finals can fast-track a young player's career.

Heading into 2025, Indy Eleven remains one of the benchmark academies in the country, but they also have a target on their backs. Every team is aiming to dethrone them.
Players to Watch
The 2025 USL Academy Finals are packed with talent, and this year’s group might be the strongest yet. From teen pros already making waves in the USL Championship to college-bound standouts shaping their next chapter, these are some players to keep an eye on during the tournament.
Jack Ryan – AC Connecticut

Jack Ryan is no stranger to the big stage. Now playing collegiately at the University of Connecticut, he first made national noise by winning the USL Academy Young Player of the Tournament award back in 2023. His mix of composure, tempo-setting ability, and big-game confidence makes him a major leader for AC Connecticut heading into this year’s Finals.
Kenneth Hoban – El Paso Locomotive FC

At just 15 years old, Kenneth Hoban made history as the youngest professional signing in El Paso Locomotive FC history when he inked his first contract in December 2024. He already has appearances in the USL Championship, the Dallas Cup Final (2024), and the 2023 USL Academy Finals. His early pro experience and maturity beyond his age make him one of the tournament’s must-watch prodigies.
Jake Alb – Indy Eleven

Jake Alb is that guy when it comes to clutch moments. He scored the game-winning goal at the 2024 USL Academy Finals and walked away with the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player. With his history of delivering under pressure, Alb returns in 2025 as one of the most dangerous attackers in the entire field.
Luca Sowinski – Lexington SC

Luca Sowinski’s journey has already taken him from Barca Residency Academy to breaking records as the youngest pro signing in FC Tulsa history at 18 years, 1 month, and 9 days old. He then dropped a professional hat-trick for Tulsa on October 1st, 2022, showcasing serious attacking upside. Now with Lexington SC, Sowinski brings experience, creativity, and goal-scoring instincts that make him a premium player to watch.
Tyson Epsy – Orange County SC

One of the nation’s most highly regarded youth prospects, Tyson Epsy is turning heads everywhere. Fresh off a call-up to the USYNT U-17 camp, he also signed his first pro deal with Orange County SC at just 16. A former standout in LAFC’s academy and a 2025 MLS NEXT All-Star selection, Epsy brings pace, creativity, and elite-level potential that make him a headline attraction in this year’s Finals.
Notable Alumni
The USL Academy Finals have become a major stepping stone for young players aiming to break into the college or professional game. Many prospects who starred in past tournaments — including several from Indy Eleven’s 2024 championship squad — have since earned pro minutes or high-profile college commitments.
One of the most notable players is Tate Johnson. He played a key role in Tampa Bay United’s run to the U17 Boys’ Elite title at the 2021 USL Academy Cup when he was only 15 years old at the time. He built on that momentum the following year, delivering an All-Tournament Team–caliber performance at the 2022 USL Academy Finals as United went on to claim the championship. Around the same period, Johnson broke into the Tampa Bay Rowdies’ first-team picture, making his debut and accumulating more than 100 minutes across the USL Championship and U.S. Open Cup — all before his 18th birthday. He also gained experience with Tampa Bay United in USL League Two, further strengthening his development path.

Fast forward to now, and Johnson is with the Vancouver Whitecaps after being selected in the first round of the 2025 MLS SuperDraft.
Bryce Jamison was also a product of the USL youth system. He first broke out at the Barca Residency Academy in Arizona, where his performances earned him a spot in the 2022 MLS NEXT All-Star Game. Not long after, he signed his first professional deal with Orange County SC in the USL Championship and went on to make his debut with the team. The Atlanta-native has also been a regular within the U.S. Youth National Team setup, receiving several call-ups — including a place on the U-17 squad that competed at the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Indonesia.

As Jamison adjusted to life in a professional environment, he logged important minutes with Orange County’s academy side, helping bridge the gap to the senior team. His rise accelerated after being named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2022 USL Academy Finals Showcase. He carried that momentum into the 2023 USL Academy Finals. By the end of the tournament, he was one of four Orange County players selected to the All-Tournament Team and finished as co-winner of the Golden Boot.
Teams Entering With Momentum
A handful of clubs arrive in Bradenton carrying serious momentum. Indy Eleven remains the most dangerous team in the field, riding last year’s championship confidence and its strong academy-to-pro track record. Richmond Kickers continue to build one of the most consistent youth pipelines in the USL ecosystem and are expected to challenge deep into the bracket. El Paso Locomotive FC enters this year’s tournament with promising form and a squad capable of surprising higher seeds, while Orange County SC, known for nurturing high-level West Coast talent, could be a sleeper pick depending on matchups.

Wild-card teams also tend to make noise, as the hunger and motivation that comes with earning a last-minute spot often fuels early-round upsets. With such a balanced bracket, no team can afford a slow start.
Catch The Next Set Of Breakout Stars
The 2025 USL Academy Finals offer exactly what soccer fans crave — emerging stars, underdog stories, and the feeling of being early on players who could become future pros. Every match is a chance to witness the breakout moment of a 16 or 17-year-old on the verge of making the jump to MLS NEXT Pro, USL Championship, or a top NCAA Division I program.
