How the Kelley Brothers Went From La Masia to Ivy League Champs

The Kelley brothers is a story of ambition, sacrifice, and perseverance. It is a reminder that there is no single blueprint for success — and that sometimes, the most unconventional journeys lead to the most meaningful destinations.

The story of the Kelley brothers is unlike anything typically seen in American college soccer. Today, Kevin and Kristian Kelley stand side by side at Princeton University, newly crowned Ivy League Tournament champions. But their path to New Jersey has been anything but ordinary. It is a story that stretches across continents, elite academies, and unexpected twists — a journey that reflects both ambition and resilience.

Catching the Eye of Spanish Scouts

Although both brothers were born in the United States, their footballing identities were shaped thousands of miles away. Kevin, the older sibling born in 2005, was the first to be noticed. During an international youth tournament in Portugal, he caught the eye of scouts from FC Barcelona — a moment that would alter the direction of his young life. Soon after, he received an invitation to join La Masia, arguably the most renowned academy in world football.

For Kristian, the younger brother, the move to Europe came shortly after. But instead of Barcelona, he headed to RCD Espanyol, making Barcelona’s two rival academies home to two American brothers. Even in those early years, Kristian showed a technical profile that made him a natural fit in Spain’s developmental system.

During this period, Kevin’s progress was recognized at the international level as well. He received a call-up to the U.S. U-15 national team, establishing himself as a high-upside prospect with an international pedigree.

Yet playing in Europe so young came with major obstacles. FIFA’s strict regulations on minors presented ongoing challenges, and the Kelley brothers faced legal barriers that limited their ability to compete in official matches. Despite excelling in training environments, the lack of match eligibility forced the family to seek new options.

Moving to More Powerhouse Academies

Their next stop was Paris, where both brothers joined Paris Saint-Germain’s academy, another powerhouse in global football. Training in the shadow of elite professionals at PSG brought a new level of exposure and development. After Paris, the brothers spent additional time in Sevilla, continuing to refine their game in one of Spain’s most respected youth setups.

Each move added layers to their understanding of football — Barcelona’s positional mastery, Espanyol’s emphasis on discipline, PSG’s blend of flair and athleticism, Sevilla’s tactical intelligence. Few American teenagers accumulate such a diverse footballing education before even entering high school.

Back to the States

Eventually, the Kelley family made the decision to return to the United States. Upon coming back, Kevin and Kristian joined the FC Dallas academy, a program known for producing professional talent at an elite rate. The transition allowed both brothers to gain stability, playing time, and a clearer path toward the collegiate and professional ranks.

Kevin, being a year older, soon made his college decision — committing to Princeton University, where he arrived in 2023. That same year, Kristian moved to the Real Salt Lake academy, where he didn’t just train: he debuted for Real Monarchs in MLS NEXT Pro, appearing in five matches as a teenager.

The Duo at Princeton

By the 2024–25 season, both brothers were reunited at Princeton, each bringing with them a decade of elite training across Europe and the United States.

Kevin has become one of the program’s most reliable contributors. Since 2023, he has played 48 matches, tallying 5 goals and 5 assists, while displaying the composure and game intelligence shaped by his formative years in Europe.

Kristian, who joined the Tigers after his time at RSL, has added his own influence. Between 2024 and today, he has played 30 matches, scoring 2 goals and adding 1 assist. His versatility and tactical feel have made him a steady presence in Princeton’s system.

Together, they helped the Tigers capture the Ivy League Tournament title, a crowning moment in a journey that has seen both triumph and adversity.

The Bigger Picture

The Kelley brothers embody a rare path in American soccer. Few players — let alone siblings — can say they trained at Barcelona, Espanyol, PSG, Sevilla, FC Dallas, debuted in MLS NEXT Pro, and then lifted a trophy with one of the most prestigious universities in the country.

Their story is one of ambition, sacrifice, and perseverance. It is a reminder that there is no single blueprint for success — and that sometimes, the most unconventional journeys lead to the most meaningful destinations.

The Kelley brothers took the long road home. And today, they stand as proof that dreams can take you far — across oceans, across cultures, and ultimately, to the place where it all comes together.
