Never underestimate High Point University’s men’s soccer team. The Panthers are not just having a good year; they’re having a statement year. With a scorching run through the Big South and a culture that’s built for winning, High Point is proving it’s more than a mid-major: it’s a contender.
What They’ve Accomplished This Season
High Point marched through Big South play with absolute authority, finishing the regular season undefeated. Their 7–0 conference record wasn’t just impressive — it delivered their third straight Big South regular-season title, cementing a dynasty-level run for the program. They then rolled that momentum straight into the postseason, dominating the conference tournament and defeating No. 2 seed Gardner-Webb 3–0 to secure their fourth Big South Tournament championship. It marked the 11th conference title in program history and underscored just how consistent this team has become.

This season’s performance also put High Point back into rare territory. Their 13 total wins are the most the program has secured since 2019, and the milestones didn’t stop there. In one of the strongest statistical showings in conference history, the Panthers recorded a staggering 22–1 goal differential against Big South opponents — the best mark ever posted in the league. To cap it off, the Panthers swept all eight major Big South annual awards, a clean sweep that speaks volumes about the depth and dominance of the squad.
All of these achievements earned High Point University the highest national seed in school history, receiving the No. 10 seed and a first-round bye in the Division I Men's Soccer NCAA Tournament.
Players to Watch
High Point’s success comes from a full-team effort, but several players have been the heartbeat of this historic run. Forward Daniel Lugo has been the offensive engine all season long. His goal in the Big South championship match represented the kind of timely production he’s delivered throughout the campaign. In total, he has scored 14 goals this season. Alongside him, Alfred Baafi has proven to be a vertical threat, especially in aerial situations, including a crucial header in the title match that showcased his physical presence and timing.

On the defensive end, Lukas Kamrath has been the glue holding the backline together. His play earned him Big South Defensive Player of the Year honors, reflecting both his leadership and reliability in high-pressure moments. Behind him, goalkeeper Josh Caron has been a steady force, matching the program’s single-season record with nine clean sheets. His composure and shot-stopping ability have turned narrow matches into dominant ones. Freshman standout Prosper Adagani has also emerged as a major factor, earning Big South Freshman of the Year. His impact on both sides of the ball shows that the program’s talent pipeline isn’t just strong — it’s sustainable.
Why Their Style of Play Works
High Point’s success is rooted in a balanced, disciplined identity that reflects both tactical maturity and smart coaching. They led the Big South in scoring average and goals-against average, showing an ability to break games open offensively while staying locked in defensively. Their attacking efficiency stands out — the Panthers rarely waste opportunities, capitalizing on transition moments, set-piece execution, and sharp decision-making in the final third. Players like Lugo and Baafi thrive because the system puts them in high-percentage situations.

Defensively, High Point’s cohesion is unmatched. Kamrath’s command of the backline and Caron’s decisiveness in goal give the Panthers a structure that’s hard to break down. Their discipline is also a differentiating factor — with only 17 cards across conference play, they maintain control without sacrificing intensity. Beyond the tactics, the team’s chemistry is palpable. They play with belief, trust, and a unified mentality that’s been forged over three straight championship-caliber seasons. That mentality is a big part of why they’re so difficult to rattle and so quick to punish mistakes.
A Coach With a Clear Vision
Head coach Zach Haines has built one of the most strategically consistent and emotionally connected programs in college soccer. After the Big South championship win, his pride in the group was obvious.

“They played at a really high level, and they won with class on and off the field, and I’m incredibly proud of them,” Haines said about his team after the championship. “We’re just excited to keep this rolling. We want to keep playing for as long as possible. When you come out on the right side of it, it’s something that you cherish and you remember for a long time. I love every single one of these guys. They’re just fantastic student-athletes. There’s more to come.”
And he’s proving it. College Soccer News even named him a “Next Generation Legend,” recognizing his ability not just to win, but to build a program with staying power.
Looking Ahead at the NCAA Tournament
Now the Panthers turn their focus to a massive test this Sunday against West Virginia University in the Division I Men's Soccer NCAA Tournament. The two teams played earlier this season in a thrilling 2–2 draw, a result that showed High Point can compete with — and challenge — programs outside their conference, including nationally ranked opponents. HPU’s willingness to schedule elite teams isn’t accidental. As Haines explained in the preseason, the goal has always been to “get the most NCAA Tournament caliber teams” on the schedule to elevate the program’s national profile.

Their upcoming matchup is exactly the kind of test High Point embraces. A win would reinforce the idea that the Panthers aren’t just a Big South powerhouse — they’re a legitimate national contender.
The game will be played at HPU's home in Vert Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. It'll be the second NCAA Tournament match played on HPU's campus — the last one coming when men's soccer received an at-large bid in 2018 and hosted James Madison — and the fifth overall NCAA Tournament appearance for the Panthers.
Stay Tuned

High Point has become one of the most compelling programs in college soccer because they bring everything any sports fan loves about the game: underdog energy, authentic player development, a modern tactical identity, and a program culture built on trust and ambition. They’re not the traditional powerhouse — they’re the program proving that culture, consistency, and conviction can take you just as far.
Keep an eye on the Panthers this postseason. Their story isn’t finished, and the next chapter could be their biggest yet.
